Parking in Rome

Coming by car? Driving into the centre of Rome is slow and parking is expensive. Here is where to park near the sights, the cheaper Park & Ride option, and what you need to know about the Low Emission Zone.

🚫 Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Most of the historic centre is a ZTL (zona a traffico limitato): unauthorised cars are filmed by gates and fined. The Centro ZTL runs Mon–Fri 06:30–18:00 and Sat 14:00–18:00; the Tridente ZTL Mon–Fri 06:30–19:00 and Sat 10:00–19:00; Trastevere has a morning ZTL Mon–Sat 06:30–10:00; Trastevere and San Lorenzo also have a night ZTL, and Centro and Testaccio a late-night ZTL on Friday and Saturday nights. None applies on public holidays, except the Trastevere and San Lorenzo night ZTLs. On top of that the Fascia Verde bans old polluting vehicles Mon–Sat. Leave the car at a park and ride and take the metro.

Foreign cars: Not read: whether and how hotel guests, rental cars or foreign-registered cars are handled is not stated on the romamobilita.it pages we read. A permit for any ZTL is requested online or at the public counter by appointment (since 2 February 2026). Ask your hotel before you drive in, or call the Numero Unico 06 57003 (Mon–Fri 08:00–18:00).

Fine: Not read: no fine amount is given on the romamobilita.it pages we read.

Park & Ride: leave the car at the metro, ride in

Street parking

Blue-line (strisce blu) street parking in the central and semi-central zones costs €1.00 an hour outside the ZTLs and €1.20 an hour inside them; short stays cost €0.20 per 15 minutes. White lines are free but rare in the centre, yellow lines are for residents or permit holders. Electric and hybrid cars park free on blue lines only if the plate is registered online with SPID or CIE, which is out of reach for visitors.

Tips

Do not drive into the centre

Most sights sit inside the ZTLs and the Fascia Verde. Park at a metro park and ride such as Anagnina, Laurentina or Ponte Mammolo and take line A or B.

Park and ride costs a few euros

Most ATAC park and ride lots charge €1.50 for 12 hours or €2.50 for 16 hours. A Metrebus Card holder parks free.

A satnav does not know the ZTL hours

ZTL hours differ by zone, day and night, and can change for events and holidays: check romamobilita.it or the electronic signs at the entrance.

Check old diesel and petrol cars

In the Fascia Verde Monday to Saturday, diesel cars up to Euro 3 and petrol cars up to Euro 2 may not drive or park. Newer cars are fine.

Ask the hotel about the ZTL

If your hotel is inside a ZTL, ask before you arrive how to get the car in and where to park it. The rules for guests are not on the city mobility pages.
